The recognized categories of balanced twisted-pair and components are:
Category 3: This designation applies to 100 balanced twisted-pair and components whose transmission characteristics are specified from 1 to 16 MHz
Category 5e: This designation applies to 100 balanced twisted-pair and components whose transmission characteristics are specified from 1 to 100 MHz
Category 6: This designation applies to 100 balanced twisted-pair and components whose transmission characteristics are specified from 1 to 250 MHz
Category 6A: This designation applies to 100 balanced twisted-pair and components whose transmission characteristics are specified from 1 to 500 MHz
